Exhibition commemorating 1863 Uprising unveiled in Lithuanian capital

“The Harbinger of Freedom: the 1863-1864 Uprising in Lithuania,” is the title of the exhibition commemorating the 160th anniversary of the January Uprising opened on Monday in Vincas Kudirka Square in the center of Vilnius. The purpose of the exhibition is, among others, to point out that only a joint effort can guarantee freedom.

Newly-born European bison calves await visitors at Wrocław Zoo

The Wrocław Zoo, in southwestern Poland, recently calibrated the birth of two European bison named Pomelo and Podgrzybek. They are now about 30–40 kilograms each and only drink milk; however, in the future, they will eat hay, greens, and vegetables. They belong to a species that once became extinct in the wild and was saved thanks to cooperation between zoos.

Kangaroo on the run in northern Poland, search continues

An animal welfare organization member took on the task of capturing the escaped kangaroo after it broke free from its private property in the Działdowo district, in northern Poland, at the end of October. The owners had not notified anyone about the escape or started a search for the animal.

‘Vampire’ burials in Poland: Nicolas Copernicus University team explains the discovery

Fragments of a ‘unique’ 17th-century iconostasis found in a Polish church

Researchers from the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences have discovered large fragments of a 17th-century iconostasis in the attic of a church in Nowoberezowo (Podlaskie). In their opinion, it is the oldest such work of art in the region; a unique one, as evidenced by its originality and state of preservation.

83 years ago Witold Pilecki began his infiltration of the Auschwitz concentration camp

On September 19, 1940, Witold Pilecki, a soldier in the Polish Secret Army, allowed himself to be arrested during a “łapanka”, a roundup of Polish civilians by German occupation forces, in Warsaw’s Zoliborz district, in order to to infiltrate the German concentration camp Auschwitz, organize a resistance movement there and conduct intelligence activities.
