On Tuesday, a plaque was unveiled at the Hotel Bristol to commemorate the opening of the Israeli Embassy in 1948. This was the first diplomatic mission of the State of Israel in the world.

The plaque, displayed in the hotel lobby, serves as a reminder that “on September 29, 1948, the Israeli Embassy was opened in the Warsaw Hotel Bristol, becoming the first diplomatic mission of the State of Israel in the world.”

The ceremony was attended by, among others, Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, the Ambassador of Israel, Yacov Livne, Presidential Minister Wojciech Kolarski, Senate Speaker Tomasz Grodzki and Deputy Minister of Culture Wanda Zwinogrodzka.

A deliberate decisionł

During the ceremony held in the Paderewski Suite, which was the location of the embassy at the time, Yacov Livne stated that “the decision of the Israeli government to open its first diplomatic mission in Poland was deliberate.”

“It was meant to emphasize the significance of history and what was happening in Europe,” he noted, adding that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which occurred just five years before the embassy's opening.

“The Monument to the Heroes of the Ghetto in Warsaw was built in April 1948, and the Embassy was opened in September 1948,” Livne said. In his opinion, “this illustrates the importance of history and the relations between our countries.”

Livne expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to building and promoting Polish-Israeli relations.

“Sometimes it was a bumpy road, but I believe we have addressed the issues that needed to be resolved (...). Today, we are on the highway to deepen Polish-Israeli relations,” he stated.

As reported by the Israeli Embassy, 75 years ago, on September 29, 1948, the first diplomatic mission of the State of Israel in the world was opened in Warsaw. Israel Barzilaj, the representative of the State of Israel, after presenting his credentials at the Belweder Palace, returned with his staff to the temporary embassy on the second floor of the Hotel Bristol on Krakowskie Przedmieście Street.
