Endurance cyclist Krzysztof Fechner set a new Polish record by completing a 1,016-kilometer tour on a city bike in under three days.

Despite facing immense challenges, including the burden of a 23-kilogram city bike not built for endurance feats, Fechner shattered the previous record of 703.71 kilometers.

He achieved this remarkable feat on a demanding route stretching from Wolin Island in northwestern Poland to the Bieszczady Mountains in the southeastern region of the country.

"I rode nonstop for 64 hours and 15 minutes," Fechner told Poland’s national press agency (PAP).

“The most difficult part was towards the end, in the mountains, especially reaching Ustrzyki Górne with the tough eight-kilometer climbs,” he added.

The journey was made even more challenging by strong headwinds and sweltering 40-degree Celsius heat. “I feel immense fatigue,” the endurance cyclist said.

Fechner’s choice to use a city bike for this endurance test was not only a personal challenge but also a statement promoting a healthy lifestyle.

“If you can cross Poland on a city bike, then commuting to work or giving up cars for your health is no problem at all,” he said.

In June, Fechner set another national record by riding 10,041 kilometers as an ambassador for Bydgoszcz, Poland’s cycling capital in the northern part of the country.

His achievements also include a second-place finish in the 2023 Race Around Poland, which qualified him for the Race Across America, where he finished eighth, becoming only the second Pole to complete the 4,800-kilometer route from Los Angeles to Washington.

This year, Fechner will be the first Pole and European to compete in the Tour of India, a 3,651-kilometer race that must be completed in 12 days.
