Fires in Roraima, a state in northern Brazil, have broken records after increasing by 465% over last year’s measurements in the period from January 1 to February 26, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) based on its reference satellite imagery.

According to local media, the fires have even covered the state capital Boa Vista with smoke and have reached Yanomami and Sao Marcos indigenous lands.

In addition, the federal government declared on Monday an emergency in nine municipalities of Roraima due to the effects of the drought. The decree will allow the mobilization of federal resources to address the effects of the drought.

Brazil is currently hosting G20 meetings for cooperation on climate issues.

More than 100,000 square kilometers of the Amazon rainforest were scorched in 2023, a 35.4% increase from the previous year, the Rainforest Foundation US reported on their official website.
