From the beginning of the year to the end of September, 570 foreigners were transferred from Germany to Poland, most of them Russian citizens, Polish Border Guard, Lieutenant Colonel Andrzej Juźwiak stated.
The relocation of the foreigners was done under various readmission agreements, including the Dublin III agreement, which aims to prevent people from applying for asylum claims from multiple EU member states and quickly determine which state is responsible for their claim.
The country from which most foreigners are returned to Poland is Germany.
In 2023, there were over 900 such transfers to Poland. A year earlier, over 600 foreigners were transferred to Poland, the largest group of which were citizens of Georgia, Polskie Radio 24 reported.
Citing federal police data, German daily ‘Welt’ reported that from October 2023 to the end of August 2024, over 10,000 unauthorized entries were detected during border controls with Poland in the eastern state of Brandenburg. In that period 5,100 people were turned back at the border.
“Based on the so-called risk analysis, mobile patrols carry out compensatory activities consisting of, among others, checking the legality of the stay of foreigners in places where illegal crossing of the border may occur,” Lt. Col. Andrzej Juźwiak said.

Border guards checking legality of stay

“From the beginning of the year to mid-October, almost 3,200 foreigners were detained at the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit, and a total of almost 59,000 people, including Polish citizens, were identified,” Juźwiak added.
Polish Border Guard Units operating on the Polish-German border “systematically cooperate with the German police,” Juźwiak stated.
Since the German government introduced checks, on the border with Poland, there have been several incidents reported by the media alleging that the German police dropped migrants off on the Polish side of the border.
In response to one particular incident in June, Prime MInister Donald Tusk said he would bring the matter up with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
“I will speak with Chancellor Scholz in a moment about the unacceptable incident involving the German police and a migrant family on our side of the border,” Tusk wrote on X.
