A routine traffic stop in northern Poland took an unexpected turn when police pulled over a Ukrainian driver only to find he was using a Soviet-era driving license.

Officers in the seaside city of Gdynia had spotted the 52-year-old driver going 33 km/h over the speed limit on Tuesday evening.

But when they pulled him over and asked for his documents, the man handed over a license issued by the now-defunct USSR. Informing him that his retro paperwork was no longer valid as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the officers then slapped him with an PLN 800 (€190) fine for speeding.

Because his license was three decades past its expiration date, a court motion was also filed for driving without valid documents.
