Poland’s national road authority is expected to announce within days a tender for ring road that will feature the country’s longest ever road tunnel.
The tunnel under the river Oder on the outskirts of the Baltic port of Szczecin will be 5 kilometers long and will form part of a new bypass around the city. The tunnel will be a key element of the city’s western ring road, work on which is scheduled to start next year, the Interia news site reported.
The new ring road is described by local authorities as a strategic investment linking Szczecin with Gdańsk and creating a key transport artery connecting the ports of Świnoujście and the TriCity agglomeration.
Engineers are leaving nothing to chance with design work taking account of the ever-present threat of flooding.
“The Oder Tunnel was designed with flood risk in mind,” a representative of the national road authority told a local government website. ‘Given the proximity of the Oder, especially from the eastern entrance to the tunnel, the project has taken into account the estimated 500-year water level, a risk that is expected to occur once every 500 years.”
He went on to say that in terms of atmospheric risk, a tunnel is much safer than a bridge.
