Voting has already begun in the European Parliamentary elections, with the Dutch going to the polls on Thursday to choose their 33 MEPs.

According to the government, this is to ensure that by the time the polling booths close on Sunday, as many people as possible will have been able to take part.

But this doesn’t mean that turnout will be high. In the 2019 European elections, turnout in the Netherlands was just 41.9%, compared with 50.7% across the rest of the EU.

The Dutch exit polls will nonetheless be closely watched across Europe for any trends that could emerge elsewhere.

Following the Netherlands comes Ireland and the Czech Republic, which started on Friday, followed by the rest of the member states over the weekend.
