The average Pole lives between seven and eight years longer than 30 years ago, the head of the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) said on Tuesday.

Zbigniew Derdziuk made the statement during a panel discussion at the 8th Patient Empowerment Congress in Warsaw. He went on to tell the congress that although the number of old-age pensioners is growing, the number of people applying for disability support has declined over recent years.

"I view these estimates in a positive light," he said.

The ZUS boss also said that last year, health benefits for sick pay cost the Polish government 27 billion złoty (6.32 billion euro), most of which was covered by the National Health Fund.

Also in 2023, the average period spent on sick leave was 11 days, bringing the total number of days for which benefits were paid to 276 million.

"That is a huge lack of people on the job market," Derdziuk said.
