‘This package really wins us time, but it doesn’t win us the war’: Ukrainian MP on U.S. aid

The U.S. Congress passed another $61 billion aid package for Ukraine on Saturday, in a display of overwhelming support. We discussed the impact of this decision with our guest, Ukrainian Member of Parliament Oleksiy Goncharenko.

“I want to thank all those congressmen and all those who were involved in making this a reality,” Goncharenko said.

“We see that the support of Ukraine is solid in the U.S. Congress. 311 votes against 112 is a good result,” he said.

Goncharenko added that given the polarizing nature of American politics today, it is hard to find a subject on which the congressmen could display such a unanimous position.

However, he cautioned that while the aid package is big, it must not be viewed as sufficient, especially when compared to what Russia spends on its military annually, which is close to $100 bln.

“This package really wins us time, but it doesn’t win us the war,” he stressed.

However, Goncharenko said the package conveys a very strong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that “the game is not over. Putin is not successful today with all his attempts to influence U.S. politics. It is also a signal that Putin will not achieve the goals he has in Ukraine.”
