Poland is EU’s fourth-largest egg producer, data show

The National Support Center for Agriculture (KOWR) reports that Poland is the fourth-largest producer of eggs in the European Union, after France, Spain, and Germany, with a 14% share of EU production. In 2022, the domestic production of consumption eggs reached 10.1 billion units. The development of this sector is driven by export demand, according to information provided by KOWR.

Consumption eggs constitute 85% of the production volume, while hatchery eggs make up 15%. In 2022, Poland produced 10.1 billion units of consumption eggs, compared to 9.3 billion units in 2021.

According to the Analysis and Strategy Office of KOWR, the highest number of chicken hatcheries are located in the Wielkopolskie and Mazowieckie regions, western and central Poland, respectively. The supply of consumption eggs from these two regions accounts for 62% of the entire national production.

Poland’s egg production exceeds domestic demand significantly, making it one of the largest exporters of this commodity in the EU. The main market for Polish eggs is the EU, with market demand within the community largely determining the size of Polish exports.

After a decline in egg exports in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign sales of this commodity returned to levels exceeding 200,000 tons in 2022 and 2023. According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance, 215,000 tons of eggs were sold abroad in 2023, compared to 221,000 tons in 2022.

Egg consumption in Poland ranged from 156 to 159 units per capita annually between 2018 and 2021. In 2022, it decreased to 152 units (by 4%). The consumption level is significantly lower than in the early 2000s, when it exceeded 200 units annually, as noted by KOWR experts.

World chicken egg production has remained at around 87 million tons since 2022.
