An advanced computing facility in western Poland is one of six European centers to be granted funding from an EU program to establish an artificial intelligence factory.

The €50 million investment in the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) is part of an EU initiative to create a network of AI factories across Europe, aimed at advancing research and innovation in the field.

The Poznań facility, named PIAST, is currently in development and is expected to begin operations next year.

According to the Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs, the PIAST AI Factory will focus on key sectors including healthcare, cybersecurity, space and robotics, sustainability and public administration.

Support for AI factories is considered an important step in building Poland's technological sovereignty, with investment in breakthrough technologies, such as AI and quantum technologies, expected to follow in the coming months, the ministry reported.

In addition to Poland, new AI factories will be established in Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany and Slovenia as part of the EU’s broader strategy to establish Europe as a global leader in trustworthy AI.

The centers will provide startups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and researchers with access to high-performance computing (HPC) resources, training programs and technical expertise.

The European Commission’s funding will be supplemented by €81 million from the Polish government.

Officials say the project will support cross-border collaboration, drive economic growth and contribute to solutions for major societal challenges.
