Polish gov’t releases emergency response guidelines

Poland’s Government Security Centre (RCB) has issued advice on its website on how to react to a variety of threats, including biological, chemical and nuclear emergencies.

The RCB made the advice available in Polish, English and Ukrainian on Friday on a special webpage devoted to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) hazards, as well as explosions.

The webpage informs the public how to prepare for emergency situations, including terrorist attacks.

The RCB recommends three steps:

The first is to discuss such threats with family members and cohabitants and prepare a response plan, e.g. establishing communication methods and a meeting point in the event of separation.

The second step is to prepare an ‘evacuation rucksack’ for each member of the household and keep it to hand. The RCB said the backpack should contain a radio and torch with spare batteries, essential documents, protective masks, a map or GPS device, and food reserves for two days, among other provisions.

The third step is to locate a safe location at home, school or work, with internal places with thick walls and no windows recommended.

The advisory notes also contain information on how to behave in an emergency as well as guidance on the various types of hazards.
