Italian MEP: Common denominator among European farmers is shrinking income

Herbert Dorfmann, Italian MEP spoke to TVP World about the farmers strikes across many European countries and the differences and commonalities of those in Poland and the rest of Europe.

“In Poland there is the question of imports from Ukraine. We will vote here in Strasbourg about an agreement with Ukraine. I think we need more safeguards for the farmers,” Dorfman said.

Polish farmers want the European Union to prepare certain regulations to ensure that excess grain is directed to world markets where there is demand for it.
They also want the EU to protect domestic markets from “excessive imports” of Ukrainian produce, and to withdraw "unreasonable and costly" climate policies.

“In other member states there is more concern about bureaucracy, about the common agriculture policy. But I think the common denominator is that the income of the farmers is shrinking,” he added.

“The prices for peak commodities, like grain and milk and meat. They have fundamentally been stable for 25 years but now the costs are growing and so the middle income of the farmers is shrinking,” Dorfmann noted.
