An Israeli historian with Polish citizenship who was taken hostage by Hamas during their October 7 attack on Israel has been awarded the Jan Karski Eagle Award, a distinction honoring humanitarian service to others.

Alex Danzig was kidnapped by Hamas during their attack on southern Israel and remains in captivity.

The Jan Karski Society, which grants the awards, announced in a statement on Wednesday that the Special Award of the Jan Karski Eagle had gone to Danzig, who was “born and raised in Warsaw until the age of nine.”

Danzig went on to become a historian and educator specializing in the Holocaust, was an expert of the Yad Vashem Institute, and is, according to the society, “a promoter of the best possible Polish-Jewish relations and an advocate of peaceful reconciliation between Jews and Palestinians on the same land.”

In explaining why Danzig had been given the award, the society stated that he had been proposed by Father Professor Alfred Wierzbicki, who has been a close friend of Danzig for many years.

“He believes that awarding the Eagle to Danzig is not only a natural gesture of solidarity with a person kidnapped by Hamas, but also an indication of the values that should guide the modern world, which is clearly heading towards catastrophe,” the Jan Karski Society wrote in the statement.

The award will be collected by Alex Danzig’s son, Yuval Danzig, during a ceremony at the Nozyk Synagogue in Warsaw.

The Polish government has made efforts to secure Danzig’s release through contacts with Qatar, which is mediating in talks between the warring parties, but to no avail.
