Polish scientists have discovered the remains of over a thousand specimens of extinct animals dating back approximately 240 million years, including the bones of a reptile previously unknown to science.

The Sybir Memorial Museum in Białystok, a cultural institution opened in September 2021, has been awarded the prestigious title of European Museum of the Year 2024, as announced by the European Museum Forum on Tuesday. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in May 2024.

Head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression Jan Józef Kasprzyk commemorated the 193rd anniversary of the November Uprising in Warsaw. Up to 1,500 wild boars are now roaming the historic streets of Krakow, one of the city’s deputy mayors has said.

Despite lacking any physical resemblance to horses, they share a genetic relationship with them. While they are far from being elephants, they possess a distinctive trunk. The creature in question is the tapir, a substantial herbivorous species native to South America. A member of this species has recently relocated to the ‘Forest Haven Zoo’ in Lisowo, southern Poland.

“The Harbinger of Freedom: the 1863-1864 Uprising in Lithuania,” is the title of the exhibition commemorating the 160th anniversary of the January Uprising opened on Monday in Vincas Kudirka Square in the center of Vilnius. The purpose of the exhibition is, among others, to point out that only a joint effort can guarantee freedom.

An animal welfare organization member took on the task of capturing the escaped kangaroo after it broke free from its private property in the Działdowo district, in northern Poland, at the end of October. The owners had not notified anyone about the escape or started a search for the animal.

In the summer of 2022, a team of archaeologists from Poland’s Nicolas Copernicus University made an unsettling discovery. The 400-year-old remains of a young woman were buried in an unmarked graveyard on unconsecrated ground, with a padlock on her foot and an iron sickle across her neck.

Researchers from the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences have discovered large fragments of a 17th-century iconostasis in the attic of a church in Nowoberezowo (Podlaskie). In their opinion, it is the oldest such work of art in the region; a unique one, as evidenced by its originality and state of preservation.

On Tuesday, a plaque was unveiled at the Hotel Bristol to commemorate the opening of the Israeli Embassy in 1948. This was the first diplomatic mission of the State of Israel in the world.

The animated adaptation of Władysław Reymont’s novel “The Peasants” (Chłopi), directed by Dorota Kobiela-Welchman and Hugh Welchman, has been selected as Poland’s entry for the Oscars in the category of Best International Feature Film. This decision was announced on Monday by the Oscar Committee, led by producer Ewa Puszczyńska.
