Kraków’s residents turned out in force on Saturday to plant thousands of new trees as part of city-wide civic initiative.

More than 2,500 saplings were planted on wastelands in the northern part of the city in the sunshine as whole families and groups of friends joined the scheme.

When completed, the forest will span approximately 1 hectare and include approximately 5,000 trees such as sycamore maples, English oaks, common hornbeams.

"This campaign has not only an ecological dimension, but also a social and educational one," emphasized Sylwia Groń-Ząbek from the Municipal Greenery Board (ZZM).

The project "Let's create a Krakovian Forest together" was one of the winning ideas in the southern Polish city’s participatory budget and has been carried out for several year

s. Trees have also been planted in several other areas of the city.

In 2019, Kraków residents planted the Prawiek forest on a 5-hectare area in the Nowa Huta Kujawy area. The forest was created to celebrate Olga Tokarczuk winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, and its name refers to the eponymous character of one of her novels.

ZZM’s data shows that since 2019, forested areas of Kraków have been increasing by several dozen hectares every year.
