The United States has reached out to poultry producers in Poland and Lithuania, seeking to secure egg imports to alleviate the severe shortages currently plaguing the American market, the French news agency AFP has reported.

This move comes as the US struggles with the devastating impact of avian influenza, which has led to the culling of approximately 30 million egg-laying hens, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“At the beginning of February, the US embassy in Warsaw sent an enquiry to our organisation as to whether Poland would be interested in exporting eggs to the US market,” Katarzyna Gawrońska, the director general of the Polish Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers, told AFP.

A similar inquiry was made to the Lithuanian poultry producers' association.

However, both Polish and Lithuanian industry representatives have highlighted the significant logistical and regulatory challenges involved in exporting eggs to the U.S.

Furthermore, the European egg market is already experiencing tight supply, making it difficult to allocate substantial volumes for export, Poland and Lithuania claimed.

Gawrońska noted the volatile market situation and the need to assess the US offer carefully.
