More than 240 schools across Hungary have been targeted with bomb threats, sparking searches by police, officers said on Thursday.

“We are ensuring a police presence at all institutions. During the search, no explosives or explosive devices were found in the buildings inspected so far,” Hungarian police said on their website.

The threats came from an unknown sender via email.

Gergely Gulyás, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister's office, was cited by Euronews as saying: “I think we're dealing with a mentally ill person.”

Although the emails were sent via a foreign server, investigators will find the perpetrator, Gulyás added.

Over the past two years, numerous bomb threats—primarily targeting schools, shopping centers and airports—have disrupted operations and caused logistical challenges in the Czech Republic, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia. All of these proved to be hoaxes.
