More than 30 cats have been found living in appalling conditions in a cramped apartment in Poland’s southeast city of Tarnobrzeg.

Describing the scene as “horrific,” the Chrońmy Zwierzęta (protect the animals) Association said the animals had been abandoned without food, water or proper care.

The association’s president, Izabela Płudowska, said: “I have been helping animals for nearly 10 years, but this is the first time I have encountered such a situation.

“It was a horror, several dozen animals living in less than 30 meters.

“We learned that the carer had gone away for a few weeks and was “probably” coming back at the end of the month.”

She added that the cats were forced to share only two unsanitary litter boxes, while breeding among the unsterilized animals had worsened the crisis.

Seven of the most critically affected animals, including malnourished kittens, were rushed to a veterinarian for urgent treatment.
Four six-week-old kittens were found freezing cold and severely undernourished, while three adult cats needed immediate feeding and gentle attention to recover.

The association has now called on the public for financial support to cover the mounting costs of food, medical treatment, vaccinations and sterilization.

In a Facebook post, it continued: “We will definitely need your help, we will need temporary homes, permanent homes, any kind of shelter for these animals.”

Płudowska said she had reported the owner to the police, adding: “Cats are living beings, very dependent on humans.

“It would have been better if she opened the door and let them out when leaving; then they would be able to cope.”
