This year’s Nobl Prize winners for physics, chemistry, medicine, economics and literature were awarded their distinctions at a ceremony in Stockholm on Tuesday.

Five of the six Nobel prizes are awarded in Stockholm every year. The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in Oslo earlier in the day to Nihon Hidankyō, a Japanese organization grouping atomic bomb survivors.

U.S. scientist John Hopfield and British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton were awarded the physics prize for discoveries and inventions in machine learning.

The chemistry prize went to U.S. scientists David Baker and John Jumper and Briton Demis Hassabis for work on decoding the structure of proteins and creating new ones.

U.S. scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun won the medicine prize for the discovery of microRNA, and South Korean author Han Kang won the literature prize for "her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life."

Simon Johnson and James Robinson, both British-American, and Turkish-American Daron Acemoglu were awarded the Nobel economics prize for research that explored the aftermath of colonization to understand why global inequality persists today, especially in countries dogged by corruption and dictatorship.
