A man was saved by mountain rescuers after an avalanche stuck in the southern Polish Tarta range on Friday.
Rescue teams received an emergency call at 10.30am from two skiers concerned for the safety of a friend.
A total of 22 rescuers plus a helicopter crew responded to the call and found the man buried waist-deep in snow. The man, who sustained only minor injuries, was flown to a hospital in the resort town of Zakopane, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio. report.
He was trapped after an avalanche 300m wide and several hundred meters long hit near the trail to the Rysy mountain. The rescuers said the avalanche was surprisingly large given the small amount of snowfall recently.
Rescuers said the skiers were correctly equipped for the conditions and had taken the proper precautions.
They added that despite initial fears of more victims, extensive searches using specialist dogs and detection equipment drew a blank and were called off.
