EU must protect democracy or shut up shop, warns EC Vice President Jourová

European Commission Vice President Věra Jourová has issued a stark warning for the EU to protect democracy, as “without that, we can close the shop.”

Speaking to TVP World, Jourová spoke about the growing threats facing Europe, from cyberattacks to disinformation campaigns, particularly from actors like Russia.

She praised Moldova’s resilience in recent elections, calling it “a little miracle” that the country resisted intense external interference to back pro-Russian leadership.

Jourová, who has advocated for democratic values and transparency since joining the Commission in 2014, discussed the evolving challenges to the rule of law and digital regulation.

As a key architect of the General Data Protection Regulation and the Digital Services Act, she underscored Europe’s role as a global leader in safeguarding citizens’ rights online.

However, she expressed concern over the spillover of online hate into real-world violence, saying, “Online is not a jungle. It’s not just a free ride for the criminals.”
