Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said he is willing for Turkey to host peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, a move Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called a “historic breakthrough” during a recent meeting in Ankara.
Discussions between the two focused on a potential ceasefire proposal involving Ukraine, the U.S. and Russia, as well as Turkey’s aspirations for closer ties with the European Union.
But talking to TVP World’s ‘World Talks,’ experts say Turkey will look to strike a delicate balancing act, maintaining strong relations with both Kyiv and Moscow while supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Konrad Zasztowski, a lecturer at the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Oriental Studies, told the channel: “I wouldn’t overestimate the possibilities of Turkey to push Russia. But I would also not underestimate it.”
He added that as a key trade partner for Moscow, Ankara does have some influence.
