Police have launched an investigation after a treasure trove of Bronze Age artifacts was found dumped outside the offices of a local historical society in northwest Poland.

The discovery came to light when images of the treasure were sent via email to the regional office for the Protection of Monuments in the city of Szczecin.

Included among the 100-plus items were 30 bronze necklaces, weapons, shield fittings, sickles and spearheads, along with several silver items.

An officer specializing in recovering stolen artwork was assigned to the case and quickly tracked down the people who had shared the photos.

They claimed they had come across the items after they were anonymously dropped off outside the office of a local historical society in the nearby town of Gryfino.

A police spokesperson said: “This is one of the largest Bronze Age treasures found in Poland in recent years.

“The treasure was removed from the ground without authorization, destroying its context and preventing further radiocarbon dating.

“The treasure consists of over 100 artifacts, including 73 large objects and their sets, such as 30 bronze necklaces and several silver objects.”

Officers have now launched a hunt for the people responsible, adding that they could face up to eight years in jail.
