Donald Trump becoming the US president would be “a misfortune for the US and the world”, a former Polish president has said.

According to polls, Republican ex-president Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, the current vice president, are locked in a tight race ahead of the election scheduled for November 5.

Lech Wałęsa took to Facebook to share his thoughts on the matter, warning that Trump’s victory could spell misfortune for the entire world.

He wrote: “The US presidential election is coming up, and I do not meddle in the internal affairs of other States. However, the issue is too important for the world not to voice my opinion.

“I firmly believe that Americans will vote responsibly… I am absolutely convinced that the election of Trump WOULD BE A MISFORTUNE FOR THE USA AND THE WORLD.”

Lech Wałęsa is a prominent Polish political figure, best known for his role as a leader in the Solidarity movement, which was pivotal in ending communist rule in Poland.

Born on September 29, 1943, Wałęsa was an electrician at the Lenin Shipyard in the northern city of Gdańsk, where he emerged as a charismatic leader of the worker strikes in the 1980s.

These strikes led to the formation of Solidarity, the first independent labor union in a Soviet-bloc country.

Wałęsa’s efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983.

Following the fall of communism, he served as President of Poland from 1990 to 1995, during which he worked to transform the country into a democratic market economy.
