Poland has criticized the European Commission’s plan to merge 530 individual funding programs into a single national cash pot for each member state.
Speaking to TVP World, Jan Szyszko, a Polish deputy minister of regional funds and policy, said: “Centrally managed investments are needed... but nobody knows better about the investment needs of the regions than the regional governors and regions themselves.”
The plan is set to take effect during the 2028 to 2034 budget cycle but has already sparked opposition from over 130 regional authorities, who argue that it sidelines them and could lead to a politically motivated distribution of funds by national governments.
Critics see the plan to centralize control of the EU’s €1.2 trillion budget as a power grab by the Commission.
