Legia Warsaw and Jagiellonia Białystok began their Europa Conference League campaigns in impressive fashion on Thursday, picking up victories over more-fancied opposition.

The wins have strengthened Poland’s position in the country’s league ranking (the so-called UEFA coefficients) and give realistic hope that the nation could climb three places in the table.

This would entitle them to more places in the European competition next season.

Jagiellonia won 1-2 in dramatic style, grabbing a 97th winner against FC Copenhagen in Denmark, while Legia faced even sterner opposition at home to Spaniards Real Betis, where a first half goal gave them a 1-0 advantage which they held onto till the final whistle.

Both sets of supporters can look ahead to their future Conference League fixtures with optimism, as on paper they have both overcome their trickiest opponents in the league phase.
The stellar results mean that Legia and Jagiellonia jointly gained 1,000 points for the UEFA national ranking.

The wins reinforced Ekstraklasa’s position in 18th place, as no clubs from leagues positioned 13-21 achieved a better points tally this week. The UEFA coefficient for country rankings measures the performance of European countries’ clubs in UEFA competitions (Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League) over the past five seasons. Each country earns points based on their clubs’ wins, draws, and progression in these tournaments.

The total points for a country are divided by the number of clubs representing it that season, yielding an average score. Countries are then ranked based on these averages, which determines the number of spots each country receives in future UEFA competitions.

The Polish league currently has 27,625 points, while the Greek league, which is in 15th place, has 30,250 points. Overtaking them would be difficult but certainly not insurmountable.

Nations in 15th can enter two teams for the Champions League qualifiers and as many as five for European competitions, which would then boost the opportunity to garner more points in the future and thus earn the clubs more money and greater potential for success and raising the l status of the league and chance for attracting higher quality players.

UEFA club ranking (places 15-20):

15. Greece – 30,250 (+0,750)
16. Denmark – 30,075 (+0,500)
17. Scotland – 29,700 (+400)
18. Poland – 27,625 (+1,000)
19. Croatia – 25,275 (+0,250)
20. Serbia – 23,650 (+0)
