Poland’s technology exports grew for the 12th year in a row in 2023, according to a new report.

The results of the report, produced by the Polish Development Fund, a government-run investment vehicle, belie the country’s low ranking in a recent innovation scorecard run by the European Commission.

Polish companies, the report found, have increased sales in practically all fields of the hi-tech sector. Meanwhile, last year, the sector itself was responsible for 9.6% of Poland’s total exports, up from 9.2% in the preceding year.

The report was written after the announcement of the European Innovation Ranking, which showed Poland in 23rd place in the European Union out of 27 member states.

The ranking showed Denmark, Sweden and Finland as the most technologically innovative countries in the EU, while Switzerland was top of the heap in the study as a whole.

Poland, with 72.5 points, received less than half of the points awarded in the study to Switzerland, which scored 152.2.

The Polish Development Fund pointed out that despite Poland’s poor showing in the ranking, it was important to note that the country had systematically improved its number of points and was catching up.

The fund put the improvement down to the increasing levels of R&D in Poland relative to the size of the economy.

Back in 2004, Poland had invested 0.55% of its GDP in research and development. By 2022 the country’s financial commitment to innovation had grown to 1.46% of GDP.
