EU introduces speech regulations to 'protect democracy', says official

According to a European Union official, certain regulation on speech have been introduced in the EU to “protect our democracy,” from “foreign interference” and “manipulation of information.”

At the Europe Future Forum in Warsaw, Aude Maio-Coliche from the European External Action Service (EEAS) spoke with TVP World about the challenges of manipulation and disinformation in today's political landscape.

Maio-Coliche said: “We do not want to enter in disinformation laws that have been used by some authoritarian regime to just suppress voices and and dissent.”

“Everyone has the right to say something wrong.

“What we're looking at is this concept of foreign interference, manipulation of information.”

Aude Maio-Coliche aslo spoke about the importance of understanding how foreign powers manipulate information. She noted that disinformation is often spread through tactics like fake accounts, coordinated posts, and media impersonation.

She said that this type of manipulation is introduced to “sow distrust in societies, to sow distrust vis a vis the governmental authorities, to polarize, polarize societies.”

According to the EEAS official, the EU deals with these manipulations through the Digital Service Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act.

“It is not about censoring. It is about fighting some manipulative behavior that really targets us to sow distrust,” she said.
