Poland is the EU’s third-largest beer producer, according to new figures from Eurostat.
Last year the country, despite its association with vodka, produced 3.5 billion liters of beer, 10.8% of the EU’s total production.
Germany remained the leading brewer, producing 7.2 billion liters (22.3% of the EU total), followed by Spain, which brewed 4.0 billion liters (12.4%).
As a whole, the EU produced 34.3 billion liters of beer last year.
The release of the figures coincided with International Beer Day, which falls on the first Friday of August.
But compared to 2022, the production of alcoholic beer decreased by 5%, down 1.7 billion liters, while the production of non-alcoholic beer increased by 0.2 billion liters to 13.5%.
The Netherlands was the top exporter in 2023, exporting a total (both intra- and extra-EU) of 1.8 billion liters of alcoholic beer, accounting for 21.5% of total EU beer exports.
France continued to be the largest importer of alcoholic beer in 2023, with 0.9 billion liters, representing 17.1% of the EU’s total beer imports.
The U.K. was the dominant non-EU source of beer in 2023, with 0.3 billion liters imported into the EU, 57.6% of the total. Second came Mexican beer, with 0.1 billion liters (17.2% of the total) imported.
