The Kremlin has alleged an “atmosphere” created by the U.S. government led to the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Trump escaped death by millimeters when a shooter opened fire on him as he was addressing an election campaign rally on Saturday. One of the estimated five rifle rounds fired at the former president grazed his right ear.
“We do not think and do not consider that the attempt to remove presidential candidate Trump was organized by the current administration,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday, but added that “the atmosphere that was created by this administration during the political struggle, the atmosphere around candidate Trump, it is precisely this that provoked what America is now facing today.”
The motive for the assassination attempt remains unknown. The gunman, Mathew Crooks, was shot dead by security personnel just seconds after he opened fire.
The Kremlin spokesperson went on to claim that Russia condemned the use of violence as a form of political struggle. Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not planning to call Trump in the wake of the assassination.
Russia was not the only authoritarian state whose officials issued statements following the assassination attempt.
A spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said on Sunday that President Xi Jinping had expressed his sympathy to the former U.S. President, adding that China was closely “following the shooting incident at the campaign rally.”
Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro condemned and repudiated the assault on Trump, wishing him “a speedy recovery,” even though he deemed Trump an “adversary.”
