A far-right group set up by Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could be excluded from holding key positions in the European Parliament (EP), Polish state news agency PAP has reported.

The Patriots for Europe (PfE) alliance became the third largest group in the parliament after joining forces with Marine Le Pen's National Rally party on Monday.

With 84 MEPs from 12 European member states, it was initially expected that PfE would take over management of the culture and transport committee in the EP.

But Polish MEP Dariusz Joński told PAP on Tuesday: “Anyone who wants to weaken Europe and acts in the interests of Moscow should be in the corner of Europe, not in the epicenter.

“There is a certain group that sympathizes with Putin and is doing everything to break up Europe. We must do everything to prevent any divisions. Europe must be strong and united.”

Joński added: “We will do everything to make the voice of the ‘Putinites’ as inaudible as possible.”

Other sources told PAP that the Patriots for Europe group could now be excluded from top positions on a technicality.

The Polish press agency reported that in order to exclude PfE, other parties can refer to an agreement concluded by all factions before the June elections to the European Parliament, under which political groups were to be constituted by July 4.

PfE inaugurated its activities four days later, PAP added.

The final decision could be made in Brussels as early as Thursday but the Patriots for Europe group has already said that it will fight for positions, adding that its possible exclusion would be contrary to the principles of democracy.
