Browse through a Polish menu, and cabbage will appear in numerous forms and guises, but the popularity of the versatile vegetable appears to be on the wane in Poland.
The changing eating habits and preferences of Poles have hit the cabbage hard just as environmental factors have hammered cabbage farmers.
Figures from Poland’s Central Statistical Office reveal that the average annual consumption per person in Poland was 7.2 kg between 2010 and 2011, 6 kg from 2012 to 2015, and only 4.8 kg from 2016 to 2022, the Interia news website reported.
These figures are reflected in a decline in cabbage production that has undermined Poland’s status as one of the EU’s biggest producers of the vegetable.
The Polska z Natury Foundation, which aims to protect the environment, reported that in 2011, Poland produced 1,231,000 tons of cabbage, but by 2023 this amount had decreased to 620,000 tons, a 50% reduction.
Key reasons for this have been high temperatures and drought, which hinder cabbage growth. Farmers can trying to save their crops by using irrigation but this can cost as much as 4,000 zlotys (€930) per 1,000 square meters.
