A vessel containing the oldest wine ever found, dating back 2,000 years, has been unearthed in a Roman tomb in Carmona, southern Spain.

Uncovered during restoration work on a house, the wine, which was stored in a sealed funeral urn, was accompanied by mummified corpses and jewelry.

The 4.5 liters of ancient liquid were reddish in color but chemical analysis revealed that the wine was, in fact, white and had turned red owing to its 2,000-year wait to be drunk.

"We have discovered something that is almost impossible to find," said Ruiz Arrebola, a chemical analyst from the University of Cordoba.

Spanish scientists say that their discovery smashes the previous record for the world’s oldest wine, which was 1,700 years old and also found in a Roman tomb.

Scientists will now try to determine where in Spain the wine may have come from.
