President Andrzej Duda expressed on Thursday his deep sorrow over the death of a Polish Army soldier who died defending the country.

A private from the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade, who was stabbed on May 28 at the border with Belarus, died on Thursday after several days at the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw.
“A soldier of the Polish Army died defending our homeland. Deeply moved by his death, my thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones,” President Andrzej Duda wrote on the X platform.

The soldier was attacked on a section of the border near Dubicze Cerkiewne (Podlaskie Province) by one of the men in a group trying to breach the steel barrier.

While the soldier was blocking a gap in the barrier using a protective shield, the assailant reached through the fence and stabbed him in the chest. The knife remained lodged in the soldier’s body.

Branches and stones were thrown at the wounded soldier and a Border Guard officer who was assisting him.
