Migrant stabs Polish soldier at Belarusian border

A migrant attempting to illegally cross the border from Belarus into Poland stabbed a Polish soldier on Tuesday, the deputy interior minister reported.

The soldier was immediately taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

The attack occurred during a patrol along the border. Other officers were also injured during the incident.

According to Major Magdalena Kościńska from the 16th Pomeranian Mechanized Division, the attack happened at around 4:30 a.m. The assailant reached through a gap in the steel barrier and stabbed the soldier in the ribs.

Immediate medical assistance was provided, and the soldier was transported to a hospital in Hajnówka, eastern Poland. His life is not in danger, and his family is receiving psychological support from the military.

The Polish border is under constant pressure from migrants originating from Africa and Asia, who, coordinated by Russian and Belarusian services that aim to destabilize Poland’s eastern border, attempt to force their way into the EU.

Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration Czesław Mroczek said that there has been a rise in aggressive behavior and injuries among security forces at the border.

He said: “Migration pressure is increasing, and large groups, supported by Belarusian services, are attempting to breach the border.”

Since the beginning of the year, the Podlaski Border Guard unit has recorded over 15,000 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus into Poland, with 6,800 attempts in May alone.

Border protection

The Polish-Belarusian border is secured by a 5.5-meter-high steel barrier and an extensive electronic surveillance system.

Furthermore, on Monday, Poland’s defense minister revealed details of the multi-billion zloty “Eastern Shield” plan that will further fortify the country’s eastern borders.

The government will allocate €2.35 billion to the program, which will also receive funding from the EU.
