Polish farmers descend on Warsaw to demonstrate against EU’s Green Deal

Hundreds of Polish farmers and unionists have descended on the Polish capital to protest against the EU’s Green Deal plan to make agriculture more environmentally friendly.

Setting off from Warsaw’s central Zamkowy Square at noon on Friday, the demonstration under the slogan 'Away with Green Deal' has been organized by the Solidarity trade union and its farmers' branch.

The protesters have been joined by top politicians from the current main opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), including its leader, Jarosław Kaczyński.

However, their presence could be perceived as opportunistic, given that the Green Deal was introduced during the time when PiS was in power.

Kaczyński recently blamed the European Commission (EC) for introducing the plan and said the PiS government had protested in vain against it despite PiS having its own commissioner for agriculture in the EC who oversaw the introduction of the scheme.
