May 4, 2024, marks the 34th anniversary of the restoration of Latvia’s independence following years of Soviet occupation. On this day in 1990, Latvia declared independence from the USSR, reclaiming its status as the Republic of Latvia.
In addition to traditional speeches and parades, a newer tradition has emerged, where loved ones gather around a “white tablecloth” to reminisce about the past and share aspirations for the future. Some individuals also opt to wear folk attire on this occasion.
Given Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine, many may contemplate the significance of nationhood and Latvia’s 20-year membership in the European Union and NATO.
Rīga, the Latvian capital, has organized a range of celebratory events for “Democracy Week,” with free public transportation available throughout the city on May 4. Similar festivities are planned in other towns and cities, with the annual military parade hosted in the eastern city of Rēzekne.
“We are free people in a free country. It’s good to be aware of it and say it out loud. So let’s rejoice and celebrate today, honoring the most precious thing we have. We have our own country. We have a free country,” Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa wrote on social media platform X.
“I sincerely congratulate you on the day of restoration of Latvian Independence! Long live Latvia!” she added.
