“Today, with war beyond our borders, there is no room for mutual self-destruction within,” Speaker of Poland’s Lower House of Parliament (Sejm) Szymon Hołownia stated in his Thursday address on the occasion of Polish Flag Day and the Day of the Polish Diaspora and Poles Abroad.
Across the country, ceremonies were held to mark both occasions, in his televised address late on Thursday, Speaker Hołownia said that “there is profound significance in the convergence of these holidays.”
He assessed, “Currently, more than ever, the future depends on how we understand the ‘us’ in our Polish anthem.”
“I’ll put it as simply as possible. Civil wars, although I’ve never been a fan, were relevant when there was peace around. Today, with war beyond our borders, there’s no space for mutual self-destruction within. For too long, attempts were made to divide Poland into two camps. Into children of better and worse parents, into those who stood where they shouldn’t have, into different sorts, into the backward and enlightened, into Poland A and B. Enough,” emphasized Speaker Hołownia.
He added that “in recent years, everything that could go wrong in our world has gone wrong: a pandemic has struck, the climate has deteriorated, peace has evaporated. We’ll cope with this if we take the red-and-white flag as our guide.”

Hołownia further pointed out that “the Republic, just like its red-and-white flag, it is a common matter, not the property of those who govern it,” and added that “together we are capable of facing turbulent times.”
He also stressed that Poland needs concrete projects and not just “beautiful words”.
“Such a project is the modernization of the Polish army. It’s the great energy transformation. Such a project is an investment in education and healthcare. Even the highly debated Central Communication Port (CPK) can become such a project if conducted with respect for human life and property,” the Sejm Speaker listed.
As emphasized in his address, “The differences between us (Poles) won’t vanish, but if we focus on common goals, they might become an opportunity, for Poland.”
“I believe that together we can face turbulent times and ensure that Poland emerges from them stronger and happier. It (Poland) truly will not perish, so long as we still live,” he concluded.
