The flag is something that unites us above all the divisions we have. The flag symbolizes us; it’s our history, emphasized Szymon Hołownia, Speaker of the Sejm (lower house of parliament), in conducting a civic lesson on Tuesday at Primary School No. 50 in Białystok.
On Tuesday, Hołownia met with students at Primary School No. 50 in Białystok, where he conducted a civic lesson and also answered students’ questions. The lesson was primarily about Polish National Flag Day, which we celebrate on May 2nd.
“I would really like the trend of displaying the flag to return in Poland, because these are times when we truly need this flag. Our anthem has evolved significantly. We often sing the anthem at ceremonies; you are witnesses and participants of this. We sing the anthem frequently, and that’s wonderful. I would like the flag to join in,” said the Speaker of the Sejm to the youth. He added that it is a symbol of which we are as proud of as the anthem, and when we look at the flag, we feel joy and are united.
“What’s fascinating about our flag is that it combines two colors that are naturally not close to each other. This demonstrates what this flag is intended to do for us. We, as a nation, are woven together from diverse people,” added Hołownia. He emphasized that we have different perspectives and worldviews; we like different things, “but when we stand under the white and red, it doesn’t matter at all.”
The Speaker of the Sejm went on to emphasize how the Polish flag is not merely a piece of fabric. “It is a piece of fabric into which a person is woven; we are all woven in. This is us. The flag symbolizes us. That’s why it’s important to honor the flag, take care of it, and display it,” said Hołownia.
In the context of the war in Ukraine, he reminded that our ancestors gave their lives for the flag. “I hope we won’t have to,” he said.
Reflecting on the past, he emphasized that the flag represents our history and our ancestors. “We have a flag, which means we have ourselves. If we have ourselves, it will be fine. Even if we differ, we will manage,” Hołownia asserted convincingly.
During the meeting, the Speaker of the Sejm presented the school with the flag of the Republic of Poland.
The Sejm established Polish National Flag Day in 2004. It is a holiday intended to express respect for the flag and promote knowledge about Polish identity and national symbols.
