Ukraine’s path to European Union: long and far from simple

Ever since Ukraine began its negotiations for accession to the European Union (EU) in December 2023, it is one step closer to its desired goal of becoming a part of the European community. But Ukraine’s path into the bloc is long and far from simple.

A report by the European Commission highlighted areas where Ukraine still needs to make progress. These included reforms in the selection process of constitutional judges, the implementation of stricter anti-corruption measures, and the enactment of new laws to limit the influence of the country’s oligarchs. In addition to Ukraine, the EU commission suggested starting accession negotiations with Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Georgia should also become a candidate for EU membership once it implements certain reforms.

Nevertheless, when it comes to Ukraine, the EU finds itself facing a dilemma. On one hand, it wants to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people amid ongoing Russian aggression, while on the other, integrating such a large and war-torn country remains an arduous task.
