Estonian authorities have begun installing emergency sirens throughout the country. The system, which will eventually cover inhabited areas of the country, will warn of air strikes and chemical attacks, ERR TV reported Monday.

Six alarm stations have been installed in Estonia so far. By the end of the year, a total of 125 sirens are to be located near 22 towns and cities.

The authorities have earmarked €4.5 million for the development of alarm systems in 2022. They are to warn residents of threats, such as enemy air strikes or accidents involving hazardous chemicals.

“We actually have about 20 installations prepared. The work is ongoing; before that, it took some time to prepare the contracts to decide where to start,” project manager Tambet Vodi told an Estonian TV.

“We have also mapped data on people’s movements and where they are staying, including data other than (on) registration, to take into account where people are staying during the work week, weekends, summer, or winter vacations, for example. On this basis, we know where it is necessary to install sirens,” he added.

In the aftermath of the February 2022 Russian attack on Ukraine, Estonia has taken several measures to increase the security of its residents. The government has increased spending on armaments, is investing steadily in strengthening border protection, and is developing a system of shelters in civilian buildings.
