A court in Russia has decided to place Russian Forbes magazine journalist Sergei Mingazov under house arrest, state media reported on Saturday. The reporter was detained on Friday on suspicion of promoting “fake news” about the Russian military, his editorial board said in a statement.

The journalist’s lawyer Konstantin Bubon conveyed that his client was detained for sharing information about war crimes committed by the Russian army in 2022 in the town of Bucha, near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

Bubon notified Facebook that the journalist was being held in the city of Khabarovsk, in Russia’s Far East, where he lives.

Following the invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, a package of laws was passed in Russia under which citizens can be sentenced to long prison terms for spreading so-called “fake news” about the Russian military.

War crimes

In Bucha, Irpin, Hostoml, Borodzianka, as well as other towns near Kyiv, Russian troops committed mass atrocities, murdering civilians.

Since the invading forces began withdrawing from the northern part of the Kyiv region to Belarus at the end of March 2022, and the Ukrainian army entered the towns they had previously occupied, numerous photos and videos have emerged showing dozens of people killed in the streets, mass graves, as well as people shot with their hands tied. Numerous cases of rape committed by Russian soldiers were also revealed.

According to Ukrainian authorities’ estimates, more than 450 civilians were killed in Bucha.
