Czech chemical giant Synthesia has announced plans to dramatically ramp up the production of nitrocellulose, one of the key compounds used to make gunpowder.

The firm has pledged to sink 1 billion crowns (€40 million) into a project that will ultimately see its output soar 16% on the 6,000 tonnes it currently produces each year.

Synthesia has struggled to meet demand since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has already begun boosting its production capacity. It expects the expansion of its plants to be completed by the end of 2026.

Jiří Hynek, the head of the Czech Defence and Security Industry Association, said that the EU boasts only three major producers of nitrocellulose: France, Serbia and the Czech Republic. According to him, Synthesia remains the largest producer for the arms industry.
