Damian Soból’s body arrives in Poland: Polish official

The body of Polish volunteer Damian Soból, who was killed on April 1 in the Gaza Strip, is now in Poland, Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski announced on Friday. He added that the prosecutor’s office in Przemyśl, which is conducting the investigation, assumes that it was a murder.

Bartoszewski presented information in the Polish Parliament on Friday regarding Damian Soból’s death while providing humanitarian aid to victims of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The Deputy Foreign Minister recalled that immediately after receiving information about the death of the Polish volunteer, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski spoke on the phone with the Israeli Foreign Minister.

Subsequently, he added, due to insufficient response from the Israeli side, Israeli Ambassador Yacov Livne was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where a protest note was handed over. In the note, Poland demands a transparent investigation, reporting on its results, and cooperation with the Polish prosecutor’s office, the deputy minister emphasized.

Bartoszewski recalled that the prosecutor’s office in Przemyśl initiated an investigation under Article 148 of the Criminal Code. “The Przemyśl prosecutor’s office assumes that it was classified as a murder,” said the Deputy Foreign Minister regarding the death of the Polish volunteer.

“In connection with Israel subsequently assuming full responsibility for shooting the humanitarian convoy, Poland demanded and continues to demand that all consequences be drawn against the institutions and individuals responsible for this event, as well as compensation for the grieving family,” Bartoszewski stated.

“Thanks to the swift actions of our consular service in Tel Aviv and Egypt, we have achieved what I can announce, that the body of the late Damian Soból is now in Poland,” the Deputy Foreign Minister stated.

He added that the Israeli armed forces, among other things, presented preliminary investigation results to Poland, indicating that “many fundamental mistakes were made at the level of the drone operator, the commander of the drone operator, and higher commanders.” He also mentioned misidentified World Central Kitchen vehicles.

Seven volunteers from the humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen were killed in the Gaza Strip on April 1 by the Israeli army. The incident occurred while food aid was being delivered by workers who arrived in the Gaza Strip a few hours earlier by ship from Cyprus. Among the casualties are citizens of Australia, Poland, and the United Kingdom, as well as one person with American-Canadian citizenship. The Palestinian driver also died.
