Voting began at 7 am on Sunday in Poland’s local elections, in which nearly 47,000 councilors and 2,500 mayors will be elected. Nationwide, 29,037,073 people are eligible to vote. Our correspondent Agata Dura is reporting live from Warsaw, outside a polling station. Watch her report above.
The voting will decide who will sit on municipal, community and district councils, as well as regional assemblies. In addition, mayors will also be elected to office by voting.
Election silence is in place until the end of voting at 9 pm. It is forbidden to try to convince people to vote for a specific candidate or political party via political campaigning or media coverage.
There will be, however, four press conferences by the State Election Commission held on Sunday: at 10 am, 1:30 pm, 6:30 pm and 10 pm. The body will report on turnout and possible incidents.
After 9 pm the media will be permitted to report on election results based on an exit poll, i.e., responses given by voters after they leave polling places. The survey will be conducted by Ipsos.
On the basis of the collected data, after the end of election silence, estimated voting results will be presented, including information on the percentage of support for provincial assemblies for nationwide election committees nationwide, turnout and the results of individual mayoral candidates in six selected Polish cities (Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Katowice, Gdańsk, Rzeszów).
Protocols with election results will be posted at their headquarters by district and territorial commissions: municipal, city, county and provincial.
The second round of elections for mayors is scheduled to take place on April 21.
Local elections 2024 were ordered on January 29 by the prime minister.
