Twenty people were injured after a driver crashed into a crowd waiting at a tram stop in Poland’s northern city of Szczecin on Friday, local media said.
Six children were among 15 people hit at the stop, while a further four were injured as the driver crashed into their cars while trying to flee the scene, according to media reports. One more individual was admitted to a hospital later on. Two of the injured were in a serious but stable condition.
Police spokesman Paweł Pankau told reporters the suspect was a 33-year-old Polish man who preliminary tests showed was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Media reports on Saturday quoted officials as saying the suspect had been undergoing psychiatric treatment.
Nine units of the State Fire Service were dispatched to the scene, including one unit of the Port Fire Service.
“We cooperated with the State Medical Rescue Service; these actions were carried out to provide assistance to the injured as quickly and effectively as possible,” said Acting Deputy Commander of the Provincial Fire Service, Senior Brigade Commander Krzysztof Makowski.
“The incident was challenging in terms of rescue operations; however, the forces present at the scene efficiently provided assistance in a short amount of time and did as much as possible,” he added.

“I can say with full certainty that it was not a terrorist attack. Preliminary procedural activities under the supervision of the prosecutor indicated that this is a person who has been receiving psychiatric treatment for four years. At the moment, all this information is being verified in healthcare facilities,” Deputy Commander of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Szczecin, Marek Jasztal, conveyed.BREAKING: Multiple people injured, including children, after vehicle plows through a group of pedestrians in Szczecin, Poland pic.twitter.com/kfTHSXl80N
