Police in Moscow have prevented mourners, including the Polish ambassador, from attending the funeral of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

On Friday, the day of the ceremony, the Polish Embassy in Moscow published a photo of international diplomats gathered in front of the church.

“Police are preventing entry into the church,” the caption said. “Ambassador Krajewski among colleagues from New Zealand, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Australia.”

“Crowds of people are trying to bid farewell to the opposition leader. R.I.P.,” the caption continued.

Navalny’s associates reported that after a short ceremony, the body was taken to the Borisovsky cemetery, followed by a long procession of supporters.

An outspoken Kremlin critic who was considered one of Putin’s most significant enemies, Navalny died after allegedly collapsing and losing consciousness at a penal colony north of the Arctic Circle, the Russian prison service announced on February 16.

Few outside Russia have accepted the official version of events, however, with many believing Navalny was murdered.
