Estonia’s Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, announced on Tuesday that her country had effectively thwarted a hybrid operation conducted by Russia’s security services within Estonian territory. Margus Tsahkna, the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the Kremlin aims to “systematically” undermine Estonian society.

“We know the Kremlin is targeting all of our democratic societies,” Prime Minister Kallas said in a post on social media platform X.

Public broadcaster ERR on Tuesday reported that Estonia’s internal security service (ISS) had detained 10 people as part of a criminal investigation linked to the vandalisation last year of a car belonging to the country’s interior minister.

The Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna said that Russia is attempting to undermine the Estonian society with hybrid operations but such operations will fail as there is no support for them. He also said that Estonia will summon Russia’s chargé d’affaires to discuss the events. “Russia’s coordinated activities in Estonia targeted the unity of our state and society, attempting to divide us and stir up tensions. Through this, Russia hopes to weaken our statehood and our unwavering support for Ukraine. It is clear that these kinds of plans against Estonia cannot succeed,” Tsahkna said in a statement. West must remain united

Tsahkna also added that it is vital for other countries to be aware of Russia’s activities and that the West must remain unified against the Russian threat.

“We can be sure that Russia’s plans to influence societies with hybrid methods also concern our friends and partners.” “We are in constant contact with our Allies to share the details of the hybrid operation conducted against Estonia,” he added.
